IT COULD HAVE BEEN ANYONE, BUT IT WAS YOU!

back

It could have been anyone who pulled my hair and rubbed scratchy sand in my eyes,
Who gave me a spider as a birthday joke, which was not such a funny surprise!
Who pierced little holes in my bicycle tires and smeared all my books with glue,
It could have been anyone, but it was you!

It could have been anyone who kissed my lips and carried me screaming away,
Who held me tight in the damp, green grass on my very first roll in the hay,
Who promised his love would never end and that he would always be true.
It could have been anyone, but it was you!

It could have been anyone who walked with me in the ivyed campus walls,
Who danced with me through the starlit nights of many a college ball,
Who often came to my little room in the loft with the skyline view.
It could have been anyone, but it was you!

It could have been anyone who stopped the clock when he asked me if he was my man,
Who gave me a serious, confident look as he placed the ring on my hand,
Who ran down the aisle, amid well wishing smiles, as the bouquets of flowers flew.
It could have been anyone, but it was you!

It could have been anyone who said our first child would be famous and loved by all,
And this was before the tiny tot had even managed to crawl.
Who praised each word from its little mouth, or the scribbled pictures it drew.
It could have been anyone, but it was you!

It could have been anyone who sat by my side as the doctors controlled my fate,
Who kept up a smile though he wasn´t sure if all hope had not come too late,
And held brave watch and comforted me, as by miracle I pulled through.
It could have been anyone, but it was you!

It could have been anyone nailed in the box which they buried beneath the sod,
Whose soul has left for an unknown place in the hands of the Devil or God!
Who made me promise, with his dying words, to never regret what I do.
It could have been anyone, but it was you!

THANK YOU, ALL OF THE YOUS IN MY LIFE!
